The Hendrickson family made Brooklyn and Long Island their home for at least 8 generations. So when I found my great-grandparents, Clarkson and Olive Hendrickson in a 1928 Springfield, Illinois city directory, I was surprised. 1 I don’t know what brought them to Springfield, but I can only assume that it had something to do with Clarkson’s work as an engineer. They didn’t stay long, but it was enough time for their son, my grandfather (Carlton Hendrickson), to attend Springfield High School. 2
See if you can find him in this picture of his freshman class, by placing your cursor over the student’s faces.
Carlton appeared in the 1929 Springfield High School yearbook, the Capitoline and he would have been about 15 years old in this picture. Unfortunately there are no details about his school activities. By April 1930, the family is back home in Brooklyn, New York. Whatever the reasons for the family’s short stay in Springfield, I am glad they left a glimpse of their life there.
How’d you do? Did you recognize Grandpa immediately, or did it require a few attempts to locate him among the group of students?
Second row from the top all the Hendricksons have the same look especially Uncle John . He described the time he spent at Springfield High School as the greatest time he had at school and was heart broken he had to leave . He played Baseball while there a passion he had his whole life ,He even had a tryout for the St .Lewis Cardinals .He told me ” They said gain some weight and then come back ” And as you know he was skinny his whole life . Hope this helps .to put some of his thoughts on this .
Good to know. Do you know how long they were there? I thought I had heard something about him trying out for a minor league team but of course the details were sketchy.
I think that ‘s him in the upper right corner.
